FoodSave is a project to help small and medium-sized food businesses in London reduce their food waste, put surplus food to good use and dispose of unavoidable food waste more responsibly, through processes such as composting or anaerobic digestion.

The project was funded by the European Regional Development Fund, the London Waste and Recycling Board and the Mayor of London. From October 2013 to March 2015 we worked with almost 200 businesses to provide support to help them better manage their food waste.

Over the course of the project, FoodSave aimed to:

  • Divert over 1,000 tonnes of food waste from landfill
  • Reduce food waste by over 150 tonnes
  • Save businesses over £350,000 associated with waste reduction and disposal

The Sustainable Restaurant Association (SRA) delivered FoodSave for food service and hospitality businesses (including restaurants, pubs, staff canteens, hotels and cafes) and Sustain: The alliance for better food and farming ran the project for retailers, manufacturer and wholesalers.

For the food service and hospitality sector the SRA worked with businesses to run “food waste audits”.

The food waste audits ran for 2-4 weeks using “smart meter scales” to measure food waste. Like all good things it was a 3 step process.

We carry out a free detailed food waste audit of your business
We look at the numbers to understand where and why waste is being generated
We give you practical guidance to reduce the waste you’re producing

See the video animation below to find out how we did it.

Unfortunately FoodSave has ended and we can no longer offer free food waste audits. However, this website contains all of our insights, best practice, methods and tools from the programme.

We have also put together a useful one pager jam packed full of food waste facts from the project.
